ATAA Blast! Newsletter #181 – July 2025

Dear ~~first_name~~

Welcome to the latest edition of the ATAA Blast! Newsletter, with lots of informative news. In recent months I set out to get this newsletter published in the first week of the month, but that wasn't working. So going forward we're aiming to publish it in the middle of the month, except that for this July edition we have had a couple of significant delays, and it's going out in the last few days of July - apologies for this lateness.

In this Blast! edition you can see the following, with links for an easy and speedy go-to to the relevant section below:

  • ATAA National President's Update for this month, and an Executive Summary from the recent board meeting, to help keep members informed of what the board has been doing.
  • The latest ATAA Website Resource Library updates for the latest month  - With an update on the growing ATAA Resource Library, including the hundreds of video session recordings from the SIGs and network groups and chapter meetings.
  • Online Discussion Forums - This resource is now growing in popularity in the ATAA website (for ATAA members only - login is required).
  • ATAA National Board Update - News from the national board of directors.
  • List of all of the ATAA Chapters, SIGs and Network Groups - More opportunities for the ATAA members for networking and learning.
  • An update on the Trading Expert Series (formerly known as the National Speaker Series) of online presentations - the first one back in April with Brent Penfold was very successful, and the latest one with Gary Stone recently.
  • The ATAA 2025 In-Person Conference update - An update on the upcoming 2025 in-person ATAA Conference in Melbourne in October.
  • Updates from the ATAA Chapters and SIGs: Included below are updates for some SIGs, including the RealTest Coders Online Workshop, and some chapters: Canberra, Melbourne - those that have submitted content. Thank you to: Mark (Canberra) for your ongoing contributions.
  • IFTA information update: Latest information from IFTA including details about the IFTA Conference in September.
  • TECHNICAL ANALYSIS article - This month, Phil Johns has written about the "Business of Trading" and gives some great tips to help with success in the markets. In last month's article we presented Part 1 addressing the question of: "What is Technical Analysis really?" We are holding over Part 2 of this until the August edition.
  • Detailed benefits for ATAA members.
As the national Marketing Director, I am still including key marketing phrases in this Blast!:- the ATAA Tag line in blue below, and the ATAA Elevator Pitch also in blue below at the bottom of this email. Feel free to use these in your own correspondence to help encourage new members, and of course to remind existing members of why they are ATAA members.

I do hope you find this Blast! newsletter useful and interesting reading; but do feel free to tell us what you really think, and how we can improve it.

NOTES about this newsletter: The appearance of this email newsletter can be a little different depending on how you view it. In Google's Gmail the Gmail Inbox might show just a portion of this edition. At this stage I am not sure of the best way to work around this issue.

ps: Apologies continue for any odd formatting that you might find which I cannot resolve - font size or line spacing etc - as these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor tool (there are probably odd HTML codes hidden behind the text, which we have not found yet). Every month when I prepare this newsletter, I spend ridiculous amounts of time fiddling around trying to make the line spacing consistent throughout, and the font sizes consistent; but it still turns out less than I would want it to.

From the President's Desk – July 2025

The ATAA made encouraging progress in June as we continue working towards our goals.

Our membership promotion — launched in April — is gaining traction. We have now seen four consecutive months of net membership growth, which is a very positive sign.

Trading Expert Series – We have also been preparing for the next event in our Trading Expert Series, which doubles as an outreach and marketing tool for the ATAA. The latest session took place on 12 July and was well received, and the recording of the session is now available in the ATAA Resource Library.

National Conference – Preparations for the ATAA National Conference in October are well underway. The full program is now finalised and registrations are open. This will be a two-day hybrid event held in Melbourne — with the option to attend either in-person or online. We look forward to welcoming both long-time members and new faces.

Discounts – As many of you know, I have written recently about the need for more volunteers to help on the ATAA Board. To make board service more appealing, the Board has now approved a new incentive: a 50% discount on ATAA membership and National Conference fees for active directors. This benefit is also available to any member who joins the Board before the Conference and contributes actively for at least six months. It’s a small way to acknowledge the time and energy our volunteers contribute.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please get in touch.

IFTA – Finally, a quick reminder: nominations for the IFTA board (the global federation we’re a part of) close on 25 July. Details were sent out recently via email — please check your inbox if you'd like to get involved at an international level.

Executive Summary – ATAA Board Meeting (1 July 2025)

At its July meeting, the ATAA Board reviewed developments in membership growth, financial planning, and preparations for the October National Conference. Membership numbers have shown modest improvement in recent months, supported by a promotional trial. Conference planning is progressing well, with speakers, sponsors, and marketing activities underway. The Board approved a $5,000 marketing budget to support event promotion and endorsed a 50% discount on conference and membership fees for active directors, as a modest incentive to support board participation.

The meeting also covered early learnings from recent digital advertising campaigns and discussed steps to retain new members and re-engage former ones. A motion was passed requiring chapters to seek prior approval for any speaker-related expenses over $500. Strategic planning priorities from last year’s face-to-face meeting were reviewed, with further work to continue at the October in-person board meeting.

ATAA Website Latest Resource Library Updates - recordings from June 2025

Our ATAA Resource Library now has many presentations and recordings going back to 2008. You can drill down on these using the website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date. An alternative way to find something specific on a particular topic is to search the library using the menu option: Resources > Search Resource Library.

The materials recently added to the Resource Library include:
  • Saturday 12 July - Online "Trading Expert Series":
    • Gary Stone - Building Habits to Achieve Trading Excellence and Life-long Profitability.
  • Thursday 12 June - Melbourne Chapter Hybrid meeting:
    • Keith Mundy - Why Is It So? Part 1.
    • Darren Wilson - Why now is the time for you to prepare for the end of the Real Estate Cycle.
All of these items can be found from the ATAA website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date. Make sure to browse the earlier recordings in the Resource Library, because you might never know what you've been missing. And you can also search the Resource Library by keyword. If your local chapter or SIG has a video recording, or a (PowerPoint) slide deck of a recent session, then it can also be added to our library collection.

ATAA Website Resource Library - Invaluable JOURNALS from 1990 to 2007

One of the invaluable resources that that ATAA has been holding for many years is a digital (electronic) copy of the official ATAA Journals that were published on a quarterly basis from 1990 to 2007. There are 720 articles in more than 100 Journal documents.

The screenshot below shows how to find the Journals. Firstly, login to the website using your username and password, then use the menu item: Resources > Resource Library Folders, to see the hierarchical folder structure. Then expand the folders: Member Resource Library > ATAA Publications > Journals 1990 to 2007.

Once you've done that you will see the list of available documents, including an MS Excel list of the 720 subjects/articles, and also three PDF versions of the subject index, the index by classification, and the index by author. You  can download any of the items by clicking on the small green-backed downward triangle located to the right of each entry.

ATAA Online Discussion Forums

Important Note:- Many of our SIG groups and Network Groups, as well as the chapters, have discussion topics in the Online Discussion Forum. Please note that if you post into a Chapter or SIG forum, then only some people will be able to "Reply to" or "Like" your post - other members of your own Chapter or SIG. if you are going to post, and you want any ATAA member to be able to "Like" or "Reply to" your post, then you should post into a forum that is not a Chapter or SIG forum.

The most active forums currently include: MEL Quant Trader SIG; Bigalow Network SIG; RealTest Coders Workshop; Adelaide Chapter; Trading Strategies and Systems; "Indicators and Charting", Brisbane Chapter, "Trading Software and Tools" —  just to name a few.

Canberra Chapter News

The Canberra Chapter enjoyed our fifth meeting of 2025 in June in the Board Room of Eastlake Football Club.

Chris continued with his excellent series on rules-based trading which continues to illuminate components of successful systems. Gabriel sent through an update of the portfolio competition which has participants with mixed results in the current market.

Cameron Buchanan from International Day Trader Academy gave an insightful presentation on trading Futures markets, market manipulation, the three-phase market cycle and secrets of order flow analysis. Cameron will be speaking at the Conference in October on a different topic.

We held our second hybrid meeting of the year on July 15 with 11 local attendees and a Guest, Claude, from the Sydney chapter. Shawn Hickman, research lead and Director of Market Matters presented on the mix of technicals and fundamentals, seasonality, distribution theory and cycles and waves. Shawn invests for a large portfolio and provided many examples of macro positioning in equity markets.

For those interested in receiving the Money Markets newsletter for two weeks free, you can find a link here: Take Trial.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 19 in the Boardroom at Eastlake FC in Griffith at 6.00pm. In addition to our regular ASX review and portfolio competition, Chris Meakin will continue his series on Rules Based Trading.

Remember to bring your portfolio selection to our next meeting. If you would like to enter the portfolio competition and cannot make it to the meeting, send your selection to gabriel.spacca@ataa.asn.au

If any ATAA member or guest would like to present at one of our meetings either online or in person, please send me an email me in the first instance and we can discuss your topic.

Good trading and good health.

Mark Gleeson
ATAA Canberra Chapter President
[The Canberra Chapter generally meets on the third Tuesday each month.]

RealTest Coders online Workshop

Last month’s RealTest Coders workshop (operating under the Melb. Quant SIG) saw participants discussing: Capitulation Indices, and reverse engineering an ‘All Weather’ strategy posted by Nick Radge to the RT Forum.

This month’s meeting (to be held on Monday the 14th of July) will be open discussion specifically aimed at RT coding.

The meetings are aimed at competent users of RealTest, but new users and intending users are more than welcome to join. A number of participants have also formed small ‘coding buddy’ groups (2-4 users) to develop and code up strategies collaboratively.

Recordings of the meetings along with any associated material can be found in the RT Coders SIG forum here.

Melbourne Chapter News

LATEST NEWS: The July Melbourne chapter meeting was very successful with more people than usual attending to see the member speaker presentation and also the guest speaker. We are slowly getting more and more people to our in-person meetings, to join in the networking and meeting up with like-minded traders and investors.

The Melbourne Chapter continues to host monthly hybrid meetings and we are still broadcasting the 2-hour segment of 6pm to 8pm by Zoom, and the recordings go into the ATAA website Resource Library - use the website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date. For those of you who are not able to be in the meeting room, you are missing: the invaluable networking (or "common gossip") from 5.15pm to 6pm (including free finger food), the interactions in the room during the broadcast session 6-8pm, and then further networking and guest speaker mingling over dinner after 8pm.

The one thing about networking at an in-person ATAA meeting is that you can "talk shop". That is, you can have an intelligent discussion with fellow ATAA members about the financial markets - and that's something that most of our members can't do at home, or in their regular circle of friends, because most of those people are simply not interested, or don't understand the nuances of the markets and of technical analysis.

All ATAA members who attend our meetings are given a "Door Prize" raffle ticket, with the winning tickets drawn during the mid-session break (when we change-over the speakers). You see, we still have a truck-load of pre-loved trading and technical analysis books to give away at our meetings with more coming, and these are used as the Door Prizes in the Member give-away. And some of these books are absolute gems - for free!

Don’t forget that public transport (tram) runs past the hotel front door, and there is ample car parking around the corner.

Robert Brain
ATAA Melb Chapter President and interim Secretary
(for the Council team: Paul Ash, Jim Haralambidis, Keith Mundy, Tony Hambling, Tony Leonard, Robert Grigg).

Sydney Chapter and
Bigalow Network and Forex Network (FN)

Sydney Chapter - The Sydney Chapter meets monthly. See the event details on the ATAA website.

The Bigalow network and Forex Network groups continue to meet (online). See more details on the ATAA website. You're not sure what the Bigalow Method is all about? See information about Stephen Bigalow and his ideas and methods.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

The Business Of Trading Is: Trading, Development and only then, Admin
Phil Johns (ATAA member Brisbane, and board member) contributed some great trading information to our February 2025 Blast! news.  He mentors upcoming traders, and helps to develop successful trading systems.

The following material from Phil is a high-level summary/cut-and-paste of key items from a recent mentoring session to assist with strategy development, based on real trading experiences.

Become a Strategy Factory – Test, Trade, Tweak, Repeat (study losses – tweak again).

It is a long way from a strategy concept to live trading.

“Trading is the hardest way to make easy money.”. Kevin Davey – algo champ.

I see ads every day for futures and forex trading, and it seems like any half-brained nitwit can make money easily. Assuming trading is that easy – that they can spend 5 minutes a day entering orders on their computer while relaxing on a white sandy beach – why isn’t the person selling this miraculous system for $55 or the online course using it. Why is this person practically giving away their secrets, instead of just trading their own ever-growing mountain of money? Don’t be tempted by those offering shortcuts, easy fixes, magic formulas or Holy Grail systems. That said, I have included several Holy Grail processes we use in this article.

Considering that there are only two possible directions the market can go – up or down – why do 90+% of traders fail when there’s seemingly a 50% chance of winning a trade? Anyone who tells you trading is easy is flat-out lying to you. Success in trading is possible, but there are no shortcuts. Take the shortcuts and you will lose.

There is no one right way to trade. Developing trading systems is not as easy as the sales pitch from vendors would make you believe. From day one, traders forget they are in business first, and a trader second. You need to be in the business of trading system development. Learn like you are going to trade forever. The system trades – you control the system. You must be relentlessly process-driven.

All the positive trading psychology, thinking, and coaching in the world will not make you profitable if your strategy is a loser. Even the best position sizing and money management will not help either – if your strategy is a loser, you just go broke slower. A losing strategy is a losing strategy, no matter how you dress it up. Become good at developing and critically, correctly testing strategies that deliver an edge or positive expectancy, or go home.

The news and media outlets: Are filled with babbling inconsequential journalists with no money invested in the markets they purport to have knowledge about. For the most part, they talk about noise, to capture people’s attention, increase clicks, rather than information about the Market Forces that move markets. Most comments are pure, outdated, intellectual pollution, and therefore for entertainment purposes only. No single media outlet, trader or entity is aware of all, or how, or when, fundamental economic inputs affect price, if at all. Furthermore, there are non-economic factors from the private sector that impact price, which never make the news.

There is very little you can influence except for your own actions. It follows, then, that the most important trait for you to possess is discipline. Trading is a process. There is no success or failure, only feedback. Not learning from the feedback is the failure.
Primary objective – survive to trade another day

The difference between Professional traders and Retail (mum and dad) traders is that mum and dad Retail traders spend their time focused on Reward calculations thinking about how much they can make all the time, whilst Professionals spend all their time in Risk calculations thinking about how much they can lose and what systems and controls they need to implement to limit these potential losses.
  • The rare event, the unexpected, the black swan, a fat-tail event, a flash crash or spike, the event that blows up your account, happen more frequently than the words imply – this is only managed with risk aversion in your models.
    • It does not matter how frequently a trading method succeeds if failure is too costly to bear with that model / Strategy.
    • There will always be new ‘rare’ events never considered.
  • The probability of your inability to continue to trade is proportionally greater, the smaller the size of your trading account – mathematical fact – study Risk of Ruin of an account.
  • You need to develop a set of rules whose long-term expectancy (probability) gives an edge in the market while allowing the strategy to withstand the worst possible catastrophe that could occur in the short term with sound money management strategies.
  • Diversification, always, in all ways – strategy method (Trend, Counter-Trend, Scalping, Breakouts, Momentum), market segments, strategy parameters for Long/Short, sideways markets, time frames.
  • Patience: allows you to trade only the best setups, preserve your trading capital for great trades – not all trades.
  • No strategy works forever.
  • Technical indicator signals are not much good past 3 days into the future.
  • Never override the system – you cannot analyse manual interventions or gut calls.
  • Never send a human to do a machine’s job.
  • Never manually trade. One day, the market will move faster than you can manually trade. Not if, but when.
  • You find Sympathy between Shit and Syphilis in the dictionary – if you don’t have a thick skin, you are not going to last very long in this business.

Phil Johns
