From the President's Desk – July 2026
Our attention is now turning to one of the highlights of the ATAA calendar – our Online Conference on the 22nd of August. Under the theme "The Trading Edge: Where Mindset, Strategy and Analysis Converge", we have assembled an excellent lineup of presenters covering a wide range of topics relevant to both traders and investors. The speaker program has now been finalised, registrations are open, and I encourage all members to visit the ATAA website to view the program and secure their place.
The Board continues to work on initiatives that will strengthen the Association and help introduce the ATAA to a wider audience. Our Reddit membership campaign, which commenced in May, is already providing valuable insights into how prospective members discover and engage with the Association. At the same time, we are exploring new ways of making better use of the extensive educational content that the ATAA has developed over many years.
Some members will have noticed the intermittent disruption to parts of our website during the past month. While this resulted from a broader cyberattack affecting our hosting platform, rather than the ATAA itself, it prompted the Board to review additional measures to further strengthen the resilience of our online services.
Looking a little further ahead, our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday the 18th of November 2026. Nominations for Board positions will open in the coming months, and I encourage members who would like to play a greater role in shaping the future of the Association to consider standing for election. Fresh ideas and new volunteers are always welcome.
I look forward to keeping you updated as the year progresses and hope many of you will join us for the Online Conference in August.

| Executive Summary – ATAA Board Meeting (July 2026)
The ATAA Board met online on Tuesday 7th July to review current projects and consider a range of strategic and operational matters, including.
- The Board reviewed recent membership and marketing activities, noting that membership levels have remained relatively steady in recent months. Work continues on improving the effectiveness of the Association's digital marketing initiatives, with enhanced tracking now being implemented to better understand how prospective members engage with the ATAA through various online channels.
- Planning for the ATAA Online Conference on 22 August is progressing well. The conference program has now been finalised, conference web pages have been updated, and promotional activities are being expanded in the lead-up to registrations.
- The Board also discussed new opportunities to increase awareness of the ATAA and make better use of the Association's educational resources. This included consideration of a content marketing strategy using the Substack publishing platform, together with ongoing work to expand website resources for members, including information on technical analysis education providers and trading software.
- The Board reviewed a number of governance and operational matters including: website resilience, business continuity, and preparations for the 2026 Annual General Meeting. Work also continues on strengthening the Association's internal systems and reducing reliance on individual volunteers for key operational functions.
- The next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 4th August.
| ATAA 2026 AGM - Wednesday 18 November 2026, online. The 3-year term for some directors will be up, requiring them to retire or re-nominate. Even so, there are some vacancies on the national board. If you have some ideas, or would like to help steer the ATAA for the next year or two, then look out for the Director Nomination forms which will be due to be submitted about a month before the AGM. Stay tuned for more details.

| Finance Industry Snippet - Many investors and traders in Australia think that all shares/equities/securities are traded on the ASX platform. However, Chi-X entered the Australian market some years ago (October 2011), and was then taken over by Cboe (in June 2021), which now has about 20 per cent of the daily dollar turnover. It was recently announced that Australian operations of Cboe are to be sold to the TMX Group.

It might be useful for you to know that for the Melbourne chapter meetings we use Eventbrite to get our event information out into the public arena. I use some standard text and setup, and each month I just change the event date details. All you need to do is set up an Eventbrite account - it's free - and then set up a simple event. Here is the latest Melbourne one from which you can do a copy and paste of the text and details for your own event: https://ataa-melb-2026-august.eventbrite.com.au

Oh, and here's a tip: If setting up an event in Eventbrite, make sure to specify a few "tags", so that anyone searching for an event will have a better chance of finding your event. The tags that I use for the Melbourne ATAA event are: investing, trading, ataa, stock_market, technical_analysis, share_market, finance, how-to-make-money. Note here that if your tag is more than one word, then simply use the underline character _ to connect the individual words together into the one tag.
Also, be careful because the Eventbrite process now encourages you to participate in a marketing campaign, which will cost money. Much the same as any other social media marketing exercise. The ATAA board does have a national marketing budget, but nothing is approved to be spent at a chapter level - but feel free to enquire about it.

HUGE and FANTASTIC RESOURCE for members – Our ATAA Resource Library now has many presentations and recordings going back to 2008, as well as hundreds of technical journal articles in the ATAA Journals. You can drill down on these using the website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date.
An alternative way to find something specific on a particular topic is to search the library using the menu option: Resources > Search Resource Library.

ATAA National Board updates
| | | ATAA Value Proposition: In case you missed this last month, one of the topics that you might have heard about from time to time is that of the Value Proposition for an organisation. This has come up in recent discussions in our own Marketing Working Group, and after doing some research, and having a lot of discussion, the recent ATAA Board meeting agreed on an interim Value Proposition statement. It is now posted into the ATAA website home page, in the block "Welcome to the Australian Technical Analysts Association".
But why have a Value Proposition statement? - There are several reasons why, as follows:
- Recruitment and Retention – It provides a clear, compelling reason for prospects to join the ATAA, and it reminds existing members of why their member fees are worthwhile.
- Operational Compass – It guides internal decision-making, ensuring that new programs and services align with what members actually value.
- Cuts Through "Noise" – In a crowded market with many alternative sources for news and networking (eg. LinkedIn, YouTube), it highlights what only the ATAA can uniquely provide, such as trusted professional standards and the availability of accredited certification.
- Focuses on Member Needs – It shifts the perspective from internal goals (what the association does) to member outcomes (what members want and achieve).
- Ensures Consistent Messaging – It aligns board members, staff and volunteers around a single, clear message, building credibility and trust across all communication channels.
- ROI Clarity – It helps members see a tangible "Return on Investment" for their time and fees.
- Differentiates from Competitors – It identifies a "sweet spot" where the association’s unique strengths meet the unmet needs of its specific community.
Robert Brain (ATAA Marketing Director) | ATAA huge resource - searching the website: Many of our members are aware that the ATAA website contains a huge amount of great resources on the subject of technical analysis and the markets. But sometimes it can be difficult to find exactly what you're looking for. George Gross (our Admin Sec) has added a new feature to the website to facilitate your searching of the website. It is a Google-powered AI search. You can find it from the menu option: Resources > Google-AI Website Search. Try it now. Go to that web page, and type it a keyword or two. And remember that when you do a search, you can force the search engine to look for your two or more words (a phrase) by enclosing the words in "apostrophes". The screen shot below indicates what the search tool looks like. (Thank you George). Oh, there is just one catch - you need to be logged into the website as an ATAA member before this menu option will be available to you.

"Systematic Strategy Development in the Age of AI"
Our most recent event in the “Trading Expert Series” was held on 11th April with Marsten Parker of RealTest, exploring the use of agentic AI to supercharge trading strategy development productivity. The live event was very well attended by both members and non-members, and the recording of the session on YouTube has received over 1.4K views – our best performing recording in this series to date. Following this event, the NSWG will make way for the ATAA Online Conference in August. We then plan to run another Trading Expert even in November.
About the Speaker – Marsten Parker has traded his own account for a living since 1998, following a 14-year career as a software engineer. He initially trained as a concert violinist before switching to computer programming, founding and selling a software company before turning to trading full-time. Parker is the only purely systematic trader featured in Jack Schwager's Unknown Market Wizards — the fifth book in the iconic Market Wizards series — where his long-term track record is documented in detail. A defining characteristic of Marsten's approach is what he calls his "Spirit of Experimentation" — a persistent willingness to question, iterate, and improve. RealTest has evolved alongside his trading practice over more than two decades as his primary strategy research tool, and today serves a growing community of systematic traders worldwide as a purpose-built backtesting and portfolio simulation platform.

Special Workshop | | |  | Special Perth Chapter Workshop - Report
Technical Analysis Workshop hosted by Gary Burton CFTe
The Perth Chapter Workshop was held om Saturday 20th June hosted by Gary Burton. After the initial technical problem, unfortunately the Epson Over Head Projector didn’t support the USB-C to HDMI connector, Richard Dale was able to come up with a work around and the workshop was able to commence.
The workshop was greatly appreciated by the people who were able to watch the streaming of the workshop as well as the people in the room. The on-line streaming of the workshop continued well past the nominated one hour.
Gary Burton’s simple approach to technical charting without the use of indicators in determining the market sentiment was clearly explained. Everyone now has a good understanding of “Spike High” and “Spike Low”.
Over the years Gary Burton has supported the ATAA by providing presentations at various chapters as well as on-line presentations, particularly during COVID and he has hosted serval workshops. This is Gary’s way of giving back to the ATAA in helping other members becoming successful traders, which is greatly appreciated.

The Canberra Chapter enjoyed our second hybrid meeting of the year in June with Richard Ringrose giving another excellent presentation on the identification and use of ‘Market Phases’ and the ‘5% Canary in the Stock Index coal mine’. Richard had previously presented these in more depth in earlier presentations and it was good to see their positive performance over the last couple of years. Richard also articulated some current cycle indications from Akhil Patel’s ‘The Secret Wealth Advantage’.
Bruce Taylor highlighted the performance of some key Australian Stocks in his ASX Review. Bruce provides important perspectives on the Australian and US indices and is an important component of our meetings.
Attendance at our meetings have been stable in 2026 and we look forward to welcoming new and old members to join us for our meetings. For those wanting to continue discussions on the dynamic world of trading, tech and markets, some attendees have dinner at the Club downstairs.

| | RealTest Coders online Workshop
latest news | | |
June’s RealTest Coders workshop (operating under the Melbourne Quant SIG) had 15 registrants and 10 participants. The meeting was open discussion with initially Mohamed Nasher introducing a variation of the XTO rotational strategy, which will be discussed at greater length at the Aug meeting. We also had a relatively new RealTest user, Jim, who had a lot of questions and gained a lot of feedback from those of us who have been trading for a while.
The next meeting (Monday 13th July), will be a presentation by Adrian Reid and Alan Clement on Crypto trading. There will be time for Q&A after the presentation.
Come along to any of our sessions with any ideas or critical challenges.
The meetings are aimed at competent users of RealTest, but new users and intending users are more than welcome to join. A number of participants have also formed small ‘coding buddy’ groups (2-4 users) to develop and code up strategies collaboratively.
[Usually meets online on the second Monday of the month.] | At our July meeting, after we devoured the tasty finger food, we had two guest speakers in the room to explain some great topics. Bisher Khudeira (from Stormrake) explained "Understanding the Bitcoin Cycle", and Thomas Stone (Trade View) talked about: "Strategy Development from Analysis to Automation". Video recordings of both of these presentations are in the ATAA website Resource Library for members to download/view.
As a reminder, the benefits of meeting in-person include:
- Invaluable networking (or "common gossip") from 5.15pm to 6pm (including free finger food),
- The interactions in the room during the broadcast session 6-8pm, and
- Further networking and guest speaker mingling over dinner after 8pm.
Don’t forget that public transport (tram) runs past the hotel front door, the train station is only 700m away, and there is ample car parking around the corner and nearby. And if you see any of our committee/council members below, please thank them for their invaluable contributions in helping to run our hybrid meetings, and make sure that we get a quality video recording to edit and upload to the ATAA Resource Library on the website.

| | | Do you know what you are buying/trading? | In the last issue of this newsletter I mentioned a few things to be aware of when trading of investing in the financial markets. Including that “shares” and “securities” might not refer to exactly the same thing. Also, major index constituents, and I touched on the issues with liquidity, or actually the lack of liquidity.
Below are some more things to be aware of. | The 200 day Moving Average – I have noticed over a period of time that many commentators and analysts in the US use the 50 day and the 200 day Moving Averages, and often say that a share price tends to use these curves as support or resistance levels. And that algorithmic trading systems have buy and sell triggers that look for a crossing of either of these Moving Average curves.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) – There have been more and more developments and news items on this subject in recent months. And we might wonder if the technology is still ramping up with more and more to come, or if it might have started to stabilise. I suspect there is a lot more to come, but it is very difficult to imagine where it is all going to next.
The “top 200” index is NOT the top 200 stocks – I have mentioned this before, and people don’t challenge the statement, but they do express surprise and an interest in understanding more about it. I was very surprised a few years ago when I first learned that this statement was true. To help understand it, I ran a market scan over the whole ASX market (more than 2000 securities), and displayed the market capitalisation for each security, and sorted the list by market cap with the largest companies at the top, and the smallest at the bottom.
Then I manually and painstakingly went through the list and flagged the securities that were in the XJO (S&P/ASX 200) index, and lo and behold, the last few stocks in the XJO were not the 199th and 200th stocks on the master list “by market cap”. In fact the last one came in at number 500! This means there are about 300 securities on the master list “by market cap” which are NOT in the XJO index. And you might very well wonder why.
We need to remember that there are very clear and detailed rules that govern whether or not a security qualifies to be in each index. These rules are managed by Standard and Poors and the ASX, and they can be viewed online. In this regard I would refer you to the reference website and PDF document named below.

Beware Spam emails! - On a different topic, one of our members emailed me recently to advise that he has been receiving more spam emails than usual. We all need to be very careful about the emails we receive these days because many of them are spam (unwanted and unsolicited), and they can contain sometimes hidden links to download suspicious or malicious software for nefarious purposes. NOTES about this newsletter: The appearance of this email newsletter can be a little different depending on how you view it. In Google's Gmail the Gmail Inbox might show just a portion of this edition. At this stage I am not sure of the best way to work around this issue. And my apologies continue for any odd formatting that you might find which I cannot resolve - font size or line spacing etc - as these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor tool (there are probably odd HTML codes hidden behind the text, which we have not found yet). Every month when I prepare this newsletter, I spend ridiculous amounts of time fiddling around trying to make the line spacing consistent throughout, and the font sizes consistent; but it still turns out less than I would want it to.
