From the President's Desk – September 2026
Our Online Conference on the 22nd of August was a very successful day, and I would like to thank everyone who helped make it happen. The five presentations covered a diverse range of topics, everything ran smoothly, despite our speakers joining us from several different time zones across the world. The feedback we have received has been very positive. My thanks in particular go to our speakers, sponsors and the volunteers who put the program together and kept things running smoothly on the day.
With one conference successfully completed, planning is already underway for our next in-person National Conference, scheduled to be held in Melbourne in May 2027. Alan Clement and I recently inspected a number of possible venues in the Melbourne CBD, and we now have a preferred option for consideration by the Conference Working Group. There is still plenty of planning ahead, but one of our priorities will be making the most of what an in-person conference can offer – not only a strong educational program, but also plenty of opportunities to meet, network and exchange ideas with other members.
We are continuing to look for new ways to make better use of the considerable amount of educational material the ATAA has accumulated over the years. Our Substack* is gradually building an audience, with four articles now published, and we're looking at extending this approach to video. There is a wealth of material in our resource library that deserves to be rediscovered and brought to a new generation of traders and investors.

Looking further ahead, our AGM is coming up on the 18th of November. This year, we are also working towards bringing an updated ATAA Constitution to members. Our current constitution dates from 2022, and the review has identified a number of areas that need updating to reflect legislative changes and the way the association now operates. The intention is to have the proposed changes independently reviewed before they are put to members.
The AGM is also an opportunity for members to become more involved in the running of the ATAA. Nominations for the Board are welcome, and I'd particularly encourage anyone who feels they could contribute some time, experience or fresh ideas to consider putting their hand up. If you'd like to know more about what's involved, please feel free to contact me or any of our current directors.
There is plenty happening as we move into the final few months of the year, and I look forward to keeping you updated.

| Executive Summary – ATAA Board Meeting (September 2026)
The ATAA Board met online on Tuesday 1st September, with the successful Online Conference held on the 22nd of August a highlight of the month's activities. The event ran smoothly, attracted positive feedback and delivered a financial surplus, with the Board thanking the speakers, sponsors and volunteers who contributed to its success. Other highlights include:
- Membership numbers remain steady, while the Board continues to review both member acquisition and retention. Digital marketing activity is also being refined, with recent campaign results helping to identify the channels that are generating the strongest engagement.
- The ATAA's new Substack continues to develop, with further articles being adapted from the Association's extensive archive of educational material. Work is also progressing on developing the use of video content to make more of these resources available to a wider audience.
- Preparations are underway for the Annual General Meeting on the 18th of November. As part of this work, the Board agreed in principle to update the ATAA Constitution to address current legislative and governance requirements. A revised draft will be independently reviewed before being presented to members.
- The Board also adopted updated position descriptions for the National President and administrative roles and approved the introduction of a part-time Executive Officer role, aimed at strengthening the Association's operational capacity and reducing the workload currently carried by volunteers.
- The next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 6th October.
| ATAA 2026 AGM - Save the date NOW! Wednesday 18 November 2026, online. The 3-year term for some directors will be up, requiring them to retire or re-nominate. There are some vacancies on the national board. If you have some ideas, or would like to help steer the ATAA for the next year or two, then look out for the Director Nomination forms which will be due to be submitted about a month before the AGM. Stay tuned for more details. Meanwhile you can download the Director Nomination From from our website here.
Robert B Brain (ATAA director) | Not Liquid! – Would you trade this? - Did you know that there are currently more than 2,300 "securities" listed on the ASX, including more than 460 ETFs. The largest security by market capitalisation is currently BHP ($322 billion) closely followed by CBA ($291 billion). At the other end of the market cap scale, one of the smallest securities which has been trading recently is MEL ($0.48 million) or VOLT ($0.5 million). Of course, the market cap potentially changes each day as the share price changes.
Is there any risk in trading a security that has a low level of liquidity? If so, where would you draw the line? Is this criteria a part of your documented Trading Plan/Strategy?
Would you trade a stock with a market cap of only $500,000? And which trades about $13,000 to $20,000 in value on average each week? If so, what position size would you trade?
Robert B Brain (ATAA director) | The ATAA Meetings - Chapters and SIGs - For anybody visiting our ATAA website and looking for information about our regular in-person and online meetings, we now have a dedicated web page. It is brand new, and we are hopeful that the information is current. But if it isn't, please let us know and we will update it. You can see the web page from the ATAA website main menu: Meetings > Chapter & SIG info. A screenshot of a portion of the web page is shown below. Also, if you want to advertise your chapter or SIG meeting on Eventbrite (to improve the public visibility), see the notes in the July edition of the Blast.
Robert B Brain (ATAA Marketing and Member Services director) | | ATAA Website Resource Library Updates - recordings August 2026

If your local chapter or SIG has a video recording, or a (PowerPoint) slide deck of a recent session, then it can also be added to our library collection. | ATAA huge resource - searching the website: In case you missed this last month, many of our members are aware that the ATAA website contains a huge amount of great resources on the subject of technical analysis and the markets\, and sometimes it can be difficult to find exactly what you're looking for. We've added a new feature to facilitate your searching of the website. It is a Google-powered AI search. ATAA members can find it from the menu option: Resources > Google-AI Website Search. Try it now. Go to that web page, and type in a keyword or two.

One is a list of relevant education providers, to help our members improve their knowledge of technical analysis and the markets. The second list will include relevant software package suppliers which might be used by our members. Stay tuned for further updates.
ATAA Value Proposition: In case you missed this recently, the national board recently adopted a Value Proposition statement for the ATAA. If anyone asks you what the ATAA is, you can tell them, and you can use it in your own correspondence and advertising:

Robert Brain (ATAA Marketing Director) | ATAA Trading Expert Series – Markets, Models and Mindsets | ATAA's Trading Expert Series
The last session was back in April, with the next one planned for later in 2026, now that the online conference in August has been executed.
April 2026 - Marsten Parker - "Systematic Strategy Development in the Age of AI"
Our most recent event in the “Trading Expert Series” was held on 11th April with Marsten Parker of RealTest, exploring the use of agentic AI to supercharge trading strategy development productivity. The live event was very well attended by both members and non-members, and the recording of the session on YouTube has received over 1.4K views – our best performing recording in this series to date. Following this event, the NSWG will make way for the ATAA Online Conference in August. We then plan to run another Trading Expert even in November.
About Marsten Parker – Marsten has traded his own account for a living since 1998, following a 14-year career as a software engineer. He initially trained as a concert violinist before switching to computer programming, founding and selling a software company before turning to trading full-time. Parker is the only purely systematic trader featured in Jack Schwager's Unknown Market Wizards — the fifth book in the iconic Market Wizards series — where his long-term track record is documented in detail. A defining characteristic of Marsten's approach is what he calls his "Spirit of Experimentation" — a persistent willingness to question, iterate, and improve. RealTest has evolved alongside his trading practice over more than two decades as his primary strategy research tool, and today serves a growing community of systematic traders worldwide as a purpose-built backtesting and portfolio simulation platform.
| ATAA Conference Working Group Update | | Conference Working Group update
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the ATAA online conference in August. The event more than lived up to its theme, "The Trading Edge: Where Analysis, Strategy, and Mindset Converge". Our speakers delivered practical, thought-provoking sessions packed with ideas you can put straight to work in your own trading. If you haven't revisited the recordings yet, they're well worth a second look — there's plenty to unpack the second time around.
(The six conference recordings are not available to general members. Those people – members and others – who registered to attend the online conference should have received an email dated 24 August with subject line “ATAA Conference Recordings” and which included website links to access the recordings).
Our attention now turns to the next major event: a return to an in-person conference in Melbourne in May 2027. The Conference Working Group is determined to make it one of the most exciting and valuable events we have ever held.
If you've been to one of our in-person conferences before, you'll know just how much value there is in a weekend like this — not only from the calibre of the world-class speakers in the room, but from the conversations you have with fellow independent traders in between sessions. And if you've never had the chance to come along, this is one not to be missed.
Put simply, it's a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in your trading business for a whole weekend and come away refreshed, with a suite of new ideas and, quite possibly, a few new collaborators.
Keep an eye on your inbox for dates and further details. In the meantime, if you have ideas for potential speakers, or any questions at all about the conference, we'd love to hear from you. Just drop the Conference Working Group a line at conference-wg-2026@ataa.asn.au.

The Canberra Chapter enjoyed an in-house ‘Better System Trader’ video podcast interview with the originator of MACDv, Alex Spiraglou. The video podcast presentation is based on a research paper that won the CMT Association Charles Dow Award in 2022 that walks through the development of this indicator that undermines the use of the MACD in systematic strategy building.
Members of the Chapter kindly found the original IFTA journal article and this was circulated through the Forum. We look forward to seeing if any chapter members that do rules based trading have backtested or traded the MACDv.
Bruce Taylor highlighted the performance of some key Australian Stocks in his ASX Review. Bruce provides important perspectives on the Australian and US indices and has been suggesting for some time that the ASX is heading towards 12,000.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
and Trading/Investing Tips
| | | The best performing security in late August 2026? | The purpose of this article is to encourage you to find the best performing ASX security in a recent 5-day week, and to quantify its performance, and then further consider using technical analysis methods whether it might have been a buy at the time. In last month’s Blast! news (August) I shared two price charts and we looked at the notion of a trend, and support / resistance, and the moving average and MACD indicators. I also looked at Alan Hulls’ Range+ indicator and the RSI. [You can view the August Blast! news on the ATAA website using the menu: Resources > Blast! Newsletters.]
The challenge for you:
Identify any ASX security that you have found and which has performed very well in a specific and recent week. In particular the following very specific 5-day period: the last full trading week with all five days within the previous calendar month (ie. if we are now in September, the last full week in August: 24-28). And tell us the following:
- How did you find this security (eg. using a market scan?);
- Quantify its share price performance over the calendar week;
- Would you have been tempted to invest in it at the end of that week?
- In hindsight now, with more price data available, was it worth trading/investing?
Price charts of two possible securities are shown here: | | Disclaimer:
Firstly, it must be stated that the observations and interpretations shown in this article are those of the author, and they are not recommendations for action of any sort. This material is for information and education only. And it is possible that your own interpretation might vary from those of the author (which might be incorrect on purpose), in which case feel free to send feedback to the author for consideration.
Introduction:
If you are interested in share market price charts, then this article could be of interest to you. If you are a trend trader, and looking for a security with up-trending share price, you might want to identify one very early in its uptrend – and this article will be of great interest to you.
How to identify a trending security
There are many ways to identify an uptrending share price. In this article I am keeping it simple, and looking for a security with a share price that has increased significantly over just one week – and a very particular week. And then I drill down and look at several technical analysis indicators. Mind you, there are smarter and better ways to find trending securities, but that complicates this exercise.
My plan is to do this exercise each month, and at least a couple of weeks after the focused week so as to avoid the appearance of recommending a purchase – the share price activity being studied could not be called “current price activity”. Besides, if we look at price charts that are more than a couple of weeks old, we are in a better position to quickly determine whether or not our analysis was correct or not. And in doing so, please remember that technical analysis is not a 100% accurate science. It is all about making observations about investor and trader behaviour, and trying to anticipate their future behaviour. So a win/loss ratio of 4 wins to 6 losses can still be successful – provided your losses are small and your winners can run. | Underlying selection criteria
In this exercise I am looking for the best performing share price in the following specific 5-day period: the last full trading week (Monday to Friday) in the previous calendar month, with all five days within the month. That is, if we are now in September, the last full week in August of 2026 is: 24th-28th.
I have run a market scan and found hundreds of securities that meet this criteria, but some have a share price increase over the week of a lot less than 10 per cent. I have chosen two to show you here – WLC and EUR (see initial price charts below). Many traders/investors might see the price increase of the former for the week in question (58,900 per cent) and think that that is rather fishy – and it is. In the following analysis I will be focusing on EUR (up 24.6 per cent in the week of 24-28 August).
Conclusion (this is NOT a recommendation to buy):
Based on my personal analysis of this security’s price chart, in hindsight, I probably would have bought this stock on Monday 31 August; but watched the position with a tight exit strategy.
WLC – was it really up 58,900 per cent in a week?
The short answer is that this stock did increase from 0.8 cents to $4.72 over the week in question - depending on which price chart system you look at. But why and how? Well, the company announcement to the ASX on 20 August explained that WhiteRock Lithium Corp was admitted to the official list of the ASX on 24 August. You might find that some charts show this large share price move, while others do not show any share price data before Monday 24th August. The bottom line here is there are benefits to doing at least a little research, but knowing where to find more details.
In this particular case, you can find the company announcement on the ASX website, then use the search tool to search for information on the particular stock code, and you can view charts at websites such as TradingView.com. And, of course, the announcements are probably also available to you on your broker’s website.
So, for WLC, there is currently limited price history available, so I won’t be commenting on it any further here.
Chart analysis – Support, Resistance and Simple Trend
For EUR (European Lithium Limited), if you view the daily price chart over the last few months you will see it has been in an uptrend since early August, and there is likely to be overhead resistance in the range of 38 to 40cents (very recent price action), and then again toward 45cents (see the chart below). | | Chart analysis – Volume and Sales Value
Note the following observations for the price chart above. This is a daily chart of EUR and the daily volume is shown and also the daily value traded in the bottom pane. Both the volume and value indicate that there is a reasonable amount of liquidity making it feasible to trade a position in the stock. However, the wide range in volume and value from day to day implies an amount of volatility, and might deter some investors.
One thing that we look for with volume is that it should increase with a rising share price, and decrease with a falling share price, to indicate general support for a rising share price. There are volume spikes on some days, and there are price gaps on some days. This might also deter some investors.
Zoom out
I’ve said before that we ought to zoom out the price chart and look at the bigger picture. I’ve done that in the next chart, below. This makes the overhead resistance clearer, because back in May and June the share price could not remain, or surpass, the 50 cent level. This tells me that the overall opinion of the real market participants was that this stock was not worth as much as 50 cents. So, why try to disagree with Mister Market? The market always wins. | | GMMA indicator
The Guppy Multiple Moving Average (GMMA) indicator can help to give some confidence about the chart interpretation. According to Daryl Guppy, it provides a visual understanding of market sentiment and trend strength by tracking the relationship between short-term traders and long-term investors. [Refer to Guppy's book Trend Trading, and his website: https://www.guppytraders.com/gmma-info.]
The weekly price chart below shows the 6 red (longer term) averages rising gently in the last couple of weeks, while the 6 blue (shorter term) averages turned up in late July, and have been rising ever since, and have now formed a gap between the group of reds and the group of blues. Whilst this is positive and somewhat bullish, many analysts will see this as a little too early to commit, while more aggressive traders might be confident that an uptrend is getting underway, but is yet to be confirmed to be a healthy and persistent uptrend. | | GMMA variations
It’s important to note that the GMMA chart indicator can be used on any time period chart (daily, weekly, monthly, etc). And it can show variations in the observations. The next chart (below) shows weekly candles again, but the GMMA is calculated on daily price data. Which variation to use is totally up to the analyst. | Conclusion
In the material above I have shared the share price performance of EUR over the period from about April 2026 until late August. The big question would be whether the observed share price increase through August can be sustained in the weeks that follow. Don’t forget that a good technical analyst / trader / investor likes to protect capital with a good exit strategy. So make sure to have one in place.
| Hoping this exercise has been useful for you.

(if someone asks you why they should join the ATAA, then simply tell them this) | And another thing... About Emails | Before you unsubscribe:- Please note that if you ever unsubscribe from any of the ATAA emails, then unfortunately you will be unsubscribing for ALL ATAA emails. So please think carefully before hitting the Unsubscribe button.
Beware Spam emails! - On a different topic, one of our members emailed me recently to advise that he has been receiving more spam emails than usual. We all need to be very careful about the emails we receive these days because many of them are spam (unwanted and unsolicited), and they can contain sometimes hidden links to download suspicious or malicious software for nefarious purposes. The bottom line is to always be on alert to these attempted actions. | ATAA Member Perks and Benefits

I do hope you have found this edition of the Blast! Monthly News both interesting and useful. Feel free to send my any feedback - good or bad.
NOTES about this newsletter: The appearance of this email newsletter can be a little different depending on how you view it. In Google's Gmail the Gmail Inbox might show just a portion of this edition. At this stage I am not sure of the best way to work around this issue. And my apologies continue for any odd formatting that you might find which I cannot resolve - font size or line spacing etc - as these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor tool (there are probably odd HTML codes hidden behind the text, which we have not found yet). Every month when I prepare this newsletter, I spend ridiculous amounts of time fiddling around trying to make the line spacing consistent throughout, and the font sizes consistent; but it still turns out less than I would want it to.
