| ATAA Blast! Newsletter #195 – October 2026 | Dear ~~first_name~~
Here's the latest edition of the ATAA Blast! Newsletter, with the very latest new ATAA news. We do hope you find the content useful, and interesting. Feel free to send us feedback because we are always looking for ways to improve things. | In this Blast! edition you can see the following, with links for an easy and speedy go-to to the relevant section below:
- ATAA National President's Update for this month, and an Executive Summary from the recent board meeting, to help keep members informed about the national board discussions and deliberations.
- The latest ATAA Website Resource Library updates for the last month or so, including uploaded speaker presentation slide decks, and video recording of the presentation.
- Update from the national board - on a couple of topics.
- Trading Expert Series update (formerly known as the National Speaker Series) of online presentations - The next one is in early November - just a few days away. See below for more details. This will be our fifth session in this very successful series, and session recordings are up in the ATAA Resource Library.
- ATAA Conference - The ATAA 2026 Online Conference in August was very successful, and planning for the in-person event in May next year is well underway.
- Updates from the ATAA Chapters and SIGs: Included below are updates for some Chapters and SIGs. Information below also includes the RealTest Coders Online Workshop, and some chapters.
- IFTA information update: Both the IFTA Update newsletter and the annual IFTA Journal are jam-packed full of great articles on technical analysis. The September IFTA Update Newsletter is available to download, and the annual IFTA Journal - edition 27 - is now available. BTW - The IFTA 2026 conference was in London in early October - so you've missed it.
- TECHNICAL ANALYSIS article - This month's article is all about Exit Strategies. Given the ructions in the markets around the world, and the upcoming USA midterm elections on 3rd November, and the US quarterly reporting season getting underway any day now, and the Victorian State election in late November, there is a certain amount of unease and unknown, causing many traders to be more cautious than usual in the markets. This is often apparent with lower trading volumes on most days.
- And another thing - About ATAA emails and to beware the spam emails.
- Detailed benefits for ATAA members. Just in case you are missing something with your membership.
| I do hope you find this Blast! newsletter useful and interesting reading; but do feel free to tell us what you really think, and how we can improve it.

From the President's Desk – October 2026
Our efforts to raise the ATAA's profile and attract new members are continuing. You may have noticed that we now have a much more active presence on X (formerly Twitter), with regular announcements of upcoming meetings and events, as well as advertising campaigns promoting ATAA membership. This is part of our ongoing work to reach a wider audience of traders and investors who are interested in technical analysis.
Our Trading Expert Series continues on Wednesday 4th November, with a new presentation by Robert Carver. We encourage members to take advantage of this opportunity to hear from another experienced trading professional. See more details below.
With our Annual General Meeting approaching on Wednesday 18th November, nominations for positions on the ATAA Board remain open. We are keen to welcome members who can contribute their experience, ideas and time to help run, promote and further develop the Association. In recognition of their contribution, active directors receive a 50% discount on ATAA membership and National Conference fees, applicable to both existing directors and new nominees who serve actively for at least six months.
We are also looking to appoint a part-time Executive Officer (EO) to assist with the smooth running and further development of the ATAA. Ideally, we are seeking someone with experience in project management, executive support or a senior coordination role, preferably within a not-for-profit organisation or professional association. The EO will report to the National President and work closely with our Administration Officer, Board members and Working Group Chairs.
If you believe you have the necessary skills, experience and time available, I would be pleased to hear from you and provide a detailed position description.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events and at the AGM in November.

| Executive Summary – ATAA Board Meeting (October 2026)
The ATAA October Board meeting was necessarily postponed and has been rescheduled for Wednesday 21 October 2026. Consequently, there is no Board Meeting Executive Summary for this month's Blast! Newsletter. | ATAA 2026 AGM - Wednesday 18 November 2026, online. The 3-year term for some directors will be up, requiring them to retire or re-nominate. There are some vacancies on the national board. If you have some ideas, or would like to help steer the ATAA for the next year or two, then look out for the Director Nomination forms which will be due to be submitted about a month before the AGM (that's any day now). You can download the Director Nomination From from our website here.
Robert B Brain (ATAA director) | Your position in the market is not developing – Would you sell it? - You might be holding a position in the market in the hope that the share price will appreciate, and give you a profit at some time in the not-so-distant future. One recent example of a non-performer is Wisetech Global - see the weekly price chart below from September 2024, with bad news in February 2025, then an apparent recovery, then a downtrend from August 2025. Would you have held it?
However, sometimes your share holding does not increase in value as you expected - sometimes for weeks! As a result, your money is locked up with a non-performing asset (that's opportunity clost). What can you do about it?
One option is to keep holding the position, and hope that things will improve.
Another option is to sell some or all of your holding, and invest your funds elsewhere. And hopefully your next choice will be more profitable. This is regarded as a Time Stop. The $64,000 question is: At what point do you take this action? Based on anecdotal feedback, many traders use the time period of between 3 and 5 weeks (that's 15 to 25 trading days).
By selling down a non-performing holding, you are reducing the opportunity cost of continuing to hold while it is not performing.
Of course, any intended actions in this regard ought to be documented in your Trading Strategy, and tested to a point so that you have confidence that it will work in practice.
Robert B Brain (ATAA director) | | The ATAA Meetings - Chapters and SIGs - For anybody visiting our ATAA website and looking for information about our regular in-person and online meetings, we have a dedicated web page. We are hopeful that the information is current and correct; but if it isn't, please let us know and we will update it. Robert Brain (ATAA Marketing Director) | ATAA Trading Expert Series – Markets, Models and Mindsets | ATAA's Trading Expert Series
This series of free but invaluable webinars took a break in the last few months, so as to avoid distractions from the recent ATAA online Conference in August. The next session is now scheduled for early November.
Wednesday 4 November 2026 - Robert Carver -
"The Three Pitfalls of Trading: Over-Leveraging, Over-Trading and Over-Fitting"
Most traders don’t fail because they lack a clever idea. They fail for three reasons: they use too much leverage, they trade too often, and they fool themselves with their own backtests. Trading itself might be an art — but avoiding these three pitfalls is definitely a science. In this 90-minute session, former AHL hedge fund manager and best-selling author Robert Carver introduces theoretically grounded but genuinely practical methods for avoiding all three errors.
About Robert Carver – Rob built AHL’s fundamental global macro strategy and went on to manage the fund’s multi-billion-dollar fixed income portfolio before leaving in 2013 to trade his own capital. He has since written five books on systematic trading and portfolio construction, and teaches systematic trading strategies at Queen Mary, University of London. Few people are better placed to explain where the real risks sit — and what to do about them.
More information:- This will be a 90 minute session commencing at 7:30pm (AEDT) on the Wednesday. Cost? Free for ATAA members and non-members. But you need to register.

The Canberra Chapter continues to take advantage of our local trading and presenting talent. During the September Meeting, Gabriel presented the portfolio competition with volatility being the clear winner. Chris Meakin and Dave Roberts continue to dominate the leader board at a time of multiple factors influencing the markets.
In terms of market timing, it was an opportune time for Gabriel to do a presentation on how traders can participate in recent IPO’s by adopting Darryl Guppy’s countback method. Given IPOs have no data, Gabriel presented a method of participating in recent IPOs to the market in the weeks post entrance in a plausible technical and analytical method.
Members using the method outlined by Gabriel would be happy with a 13% gain over the last month on Space X. The method may continue to do well with the upcoming Firmus and Anthropic IPOs.
After 5 years in the role of Canberra Chapter President, I am stepping down due to travel and other commitments in 2027. I have thoroughly enjoyed organising and meeting some talented presenters over the years and participating in our monthly meetings and dinners.
The committee which has had some personnel changes over the years have been incredibly supportive and I thank all of the committee members over the years for providing some great ideas for presenters and for the personal support they have given me. I would also like to thank Gabriel, Bruce and Chris for their regular, high-quality presentations that ensure everyone is in tune with the markets and rule-based trading methods.
I now live three and a half hours away on the Far South Coast of NSW and plan to continue travelling to Canberra for as many meetings as I can get to.
If a Canberra member would like to do the role, with a very supportive committee and committed regular and semi-regular attendees, contact me for a handover. Our Eastlake venue has been booked already for 2027.
Good trading and good health.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
and Trading/Investing Tips
| | | Exit Strategies - Do you need one? Are they useful? | With the current market ructions, and unknowns, it can be difficult to be profitable in the current market environment. And it can be even harder if you hold on to a losing position, or if a winning position is starting to look doubtful.
This article offers an introduction and insight into some useful exit strategies, including the use of traditional technical analysis indicators, which can be scanned for in most charting software packages. If you don't currently have an exit strategy, then see the introduction paragraphs below which try to convince you that a good exit strategy is imperative - especially in the current market climate.
Introduction - Firstly, remember why we buy / sell shares:- to make money and be profitable, or to wile away our day because it is fun. But why might we exit a position? There are several reasons, including:
- For a new investment position, the price has fallen, and our investment decision on this occasion was not a good one, so we sell based on our pre-determined exit strategy or a simple Stop Loss approach.
- The money is needed elsewhere, so we liquidate in order to redeploy the cash.
- The investment value has risen significantly, making it somewhat sensible to liquidate some or all of the position, perhaps to re-balance the allocation of our funds or to reduce the risks of this particular investment — all based on a pre-defined exit strategy.
- The investment has risen to a pre-determined price target, so we want to lock in some, or all, of the profits and exit the position (either exit completely, or perhaps only partially).
- The investment position is not going anywhere and our money is not working hard enough (opportunity cost), so we liquidate in order to redeploy the capital elsewhere for a better performance.
- The price has risen much higher than our Initial Stop Loss level, so we have raised the stop loss to be a Trailing Stop Loss, so that if the price then falls we will be able to sell and capture more profits and preserve the remaining capital.
The weekly price chart below of BHP from a few years ago is a good example of a decent uptrend weakening with more than one 'flag'. Firstly, the green uptrend line from August to December is broken in January - indicating uptrend weakness. Then the test of recent lows in March and again in May, and the 30 week Moving Average rolls over and the price crosses below it in May (ack: Stan Weinstein methods, 'Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets', 1988). All of these signals were flagging trend weakness, and could have been used to consider exiting a position. | | Technical Analysis / Chart indicators:
Many successful traders/investors like to use very specific exit criteria so as to eliminate the discretionary nature that some people use, and to make the exit signal clear cut. And when an exit signal is given, then action the exit by reducing or closing the position. This helps to preserve capital, and lock in any profits.
Some of the possible exit signals that are not considered here include: time-based exits, price target exits, and money-based exists (such as a percentage move from a recent high).
Following are some of the technical analysis (chart-based) tools that can be used in exit strategies:
- Moving Average (MA) (and Weinstein) — Note whether the price is above or below a particular MA. The 50day and 200day Moving Averages are commonly used. Also notice whether the MA itself is rising, or falling. For example, with the Weinstein approach (and a 30 week SMA on weekly charts).
- Moving Average Cross-over — The point at which two Moving Averages cross is considered by some people as a possible entry and exit strategy (or a part of a strategy in conjunction with another signal). If using a 5day and a 10day MA, then when the slower 10day MA crosses up to above the faster 5day MA, then this is the possible buy trigger, while the converse is the possible sell signal.
- Parabolic Stop and Reverse (P-SAR) — This is a simple but somewhat effective chart indicator for use with an exit strategy. It is very clear cut. The weekly chart below of BHP shows two variations of the P-SAR indicator, with two different appearances (a sequence of dots, and a series of dashes), and also the difference in the signal from changing the P-SAR parameters.
- Bollinger Bands — The Bollinger Bands chart indicator can be used to assist with buy and sell trigger conditions.
- ATR-based indicators — There are several chart indicators that are based on the Average True Range (ATR). Some sample indicators include: Chandelier Stop, and Wilson ATR Trailing Stop.
- Hull Range indicator — The Alan Hull Range indicator is one that has a sell signal built in, with one of four zones on the price chart indicating “sell” territory.
| | ATR-based stop - Chandelier
The daily chart below of ABC shows the Chandelier Stop indicating an exit with the price fall in December 2013.
| Hull Range indicator
The weekly chart below of CBA shows the Hull Range indicator which comprises two shaded bands which help to form four "zones". The dotted line across the chart is the "central cord". The measure of volatility known as ATR is used to place a band above and below the central cord. These two lines are referred to as the Upper Deviation Line and the Lower Deviation Line. These two lines create the “envelope” that defines an acceptable price range. (These deviation lines are roughly 2 to 3 times ATR, with some modifications, and with limitations on the lower deviation to prevent it from falling too far and to make it useful as a stop loss value). For more details refer to Alan Hull's teachings.
| | Conclusion
The material above is just an introduction to the huge range of possible exit strategies. For someone starting out with trading / investing, this is a good place to start the research, but make sure to continue the research until you find something that works for you, and which you feel comfortable with.
| Hoping this exercise has been useful for you.

I do hope you have found this edition of the Blast! Monthly News both interesting and useful. Feel free to send my any feedback - good or bad.
NOTES about this newsletter: The appearance of this email newsletter can be a little different depending on how you view it. In Google's Gmail the Gmail Inbox might show just a portion of this edition. At this stage I am not sure of the best way to work around this issue. And my apologies continue for any odd formatting that you might find which I cannot resolve - font size or line spacing etc - as these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor tool (there are probably odd HTML codes hidden behind the text, which we have not found yet). Every month when I prepare this newsletter, I spend ridiculous amounts of time fiddling around trying to make the line spacing consistent throughout, and the font sizes consistent; but it still turns out less than I would want it to.
