What can you expect to learn from the course?

Upon completing the course, you'll have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of Technical Analysis. You'll be able to use Modular Charts, a fully functional charting software package, to display charts and indicators, and learn how to recognize trends, manage breaks, and identify major patterns and their implications for future price movements. Additionally, you'll be able to make informed decisions about the behaviour of shares and indices, manage your funds, and scan the market for trading opportunities. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the basics of Technical Analysis and how to use charting as a tool to assist your decision-making process.


How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered in eight modules via PDF, each with accompanying screenshots of the charting software included in the course. The course does not include video components. The charting software will need to be installed on your computer. It is designed to run on Windows-based computers; however, it can be used on Mac computers with emulation mode. Please note that support for running or setting up emulation mode on Apple computers is not provided.

How much is this course?

The cost of the ATAA Introductory Technical Analysis Course is AU$400 (inc GST) for members and AU$450 (inc GST) for non-members. Non-members may want to consider joining the ATAA to receive the reduced rate and also enjoy other benefits of membership, including access to monthly meetings, webinars, and networking opportunities with other technical analysts.

Every module covers a specific topic related to TA and charting.

Module 1: definition and philosophy of charting, understanding technical analysis, criticisms of technical analysis, type of charts, top-down analysis, understanding indices, and how to compare a stock's performance with an index.


Module 2: share trends, support and resistance.


Module 3: moving averages, trend bands, Bollinger Bands, retracements, Fibonacci lines, and measured moves.


Module 4: reversal and continuation patterns, triangles, flags and pennants, and gaps.


Module 5: indicators, divergence, price oscillator, relative strength index, stochastic oscillator, moving average convergence divergence, on-balance volume, and percent price and volume.


Module 6: portfolio management, investment objectives, risk reward, portfolio balance and construction options.


Module 7: portfolio management, sector spread, position spread, focused investing, tactical disciplines, management disciplines (stop losses and breakouts), risk assessment, monitoring and review, paper trading, and recording and tax management.


Module 8: scanning the market, building a scan, finding stocks by using scanning techniques, and setting up a watch list.


The ATAA Introductory Technical Analysis course comes with a software package called Modular Charts that is specifically designed to allow students to apply the information presented in the modules. The software package includes all the necessary technical analysis tools to complete the exercises for each module using real data as of September 2021.
