We will hold an interactive session on the “NAAIM Strategy Paper Coding Replication Project”. One of our members, Graham Walker, has distributed a paper with details of a specific strategy, that each member involved in the project can code in RealTest or AmiBroker. At the meeting, we will compare the code we have each produced with that from the other members of the group, and hopefully gain some coding insights from each other.

Topic: Consult the Market about the Market - The Haguro Method

The price chart reflects the past movements of the market, and no matter how long we look at the chart it is still correct to say we are unable to predict future prices. However as far as wanting to try and predict future movements of the market the weekly time frame chart comes closest to achieving this desired outcome. Candle methodologies are often centred around the daily time frame.

The Haguro method remains in the domain of the weekly chart. Sanjin Haruro was regarded as a chart expert, his developed Haguro method of future price outcomes is based on the shape of the weekly candle. It can describe the sentiment of the market and provide powerful insights into price support and resistance for many weeks in advance.

The Haguro Method has been programmed into Metastock18 as a free application.

Topic: Trading Insights – “I’m never wrong – or am I?”

Back before COVID, we started to run a series of “Trading Insights” segments in the monthly Melbourne ATAA meetings to provide our traders and investors with special insights to help make them more profitable. This session continues that theme.

Many investors and traders have a background or career in engineering, mathematics, or science. And in that field, there is often just one right answer in many situations. These people are used to arriving at one correct solution to a problem, and they accept that all other proffered solutions are likely to be wrong.

With such a background, many of these people struggle with trading and investing because they are looking for the one correct answer when setting up a trade, or an investment position. So, once they enter a market position, they often refuse to accept that their decision might have been wrong, and so they hold on to losing positions for way too long. The end result. A loss of capital. Pause for a moment and ask yourself if you might be one of these people and looking to be more profitable?

In this session we will explore this problem and explain how to identify this in ourselves and in our everyday life. We will also explore ways to address the problem, and to be more successful with our trading and investing.

Speaker: Neil Donaldson

Topic: My trading journey

Neil Donaldson is a private trader learning the hard way by losing money, working out why and trying not to repeat the same mistake!

Neil discusses how he applied the lessons he learnt to arrive at his current systematic trading approach. Neil started like many before him, by first learning technical trading, using charts and indicators on individual stocks but finding something still lacking, came to the conclusion that predictive technical analysis was not the answer. He discovered that what was lacking was a portfolio level risk management approach and an ability to test whether an idea was valid over a large number of trades. Neil details his current systematic, rules based and backtested approach.

•     How much do you need to make to beat fund managers

•     The Twinvest method of investing that beaths dollar cost averaging

•     Defining the characteristics of you ideal trading systematic

•     Position sizing and risk management

Speaker: Millie Swan

Topic: Trend Investment Trading - Trading is Visual

Millie Swann has been a private investor and share trader for more than 30 years. Millie's business background gave her an understanding of economics and patterns, and she could see the share market was starting to move in an upward trend all those years ago. Millie's first purchase was "gold" shares in a WA mining company called Gleneagle Gold and turned $5000 into $15000 in 3 weeks and had NO clue what she was doing. So, surprised by this outcome, Millie knew she had to understand how to do this in a repeatable way. Then the apprenticeship started - five years working out what it was for her that worked. The "lessons" about her own psychology, and thinking everyone-else-had-the- "secret", was overcome through this process.

Millie has worked with most trading platforms and was very successful with CFDs shorting and long-term trading, starting many years ago. These days Millie's investments use the ‘Protrader’ platform (25 years+), and being a trend trader with the principals of Stan Weinstein with a dab of Candles, OBV and resistance-breaks as part of her process. Millie was incredibly grateful to Frank Watkins of Protrader, who taught her the foundations of Technical Analysis and visual investment and trading, not only for the money made, but the way to avoid taking bad trades and not let FOMO get the better of her.

Now, Millie makes investment trades following the trend of mass emotional markets. Millie has seen changes (in technology and the ease of putting on trades) simplified and seen many people turn a big fortune into a little one. In the last 6 years, the most successful investment trades have been with A2M, CDA, MTS (profits taken) BOE, DUR and EMR (still holding / buying). Millie has made plenty of mistakes in the last few decades and is also willing to share these too, mostly based around selling too early and not letting profits run.

Did you know that only 35% of your investment performance is from picking the right stocks?  The other 65% is through managing risk, in particular, active asset allocation. In this presentation, Zac Zacharia, a professional financial strategist and investment manager, will explain how he manages investment risk for his clients’ portfolios.

You will learn what asset classes and sectors typically do well during each stage of the economic cycle,  the importance of asset allocation, position sizing and how technical and quantitative analysis helps make better investment timing decisions. Zac will then demonstrate how this all comes together into a workable investment plan that you can use to manage your own portfolio, during good and volatile times.

Speaker: Richard Brennan

Topic: Diversified Systematic Trend Following

The presentation seeks to provide an understanding of a very counterintuitive approach to investment that not many investors practice. Diversified Systematic Trend Following. Predictive modelling tends to be a very popular method of trading for the investment community and is heavily supported by industry. This creates an uneven playing field in the markets where 90% of investors apply predictive logic to their future trades whereas a handful of methods say 10% apply non-predictive methods.

The edge arising from non-predictive methods resides in this uneven playing field in this zero-sum game. It is likely that the ‘price follower’ will be on the other side of the trade to the ‘price predictor’. When predictive models get it wrong ‘sometimes’ this sets in place a massive wealth transfer from the many to the few.

A ‘Price Follower’ seeks to capitalise on Outlier trades that defy predictive description which arise in times of market booms and bust which predictive modellers find very hard to understand. Outliers cause massive risk events for predictive modellers and significant opportunities for price followers.

Topic: Dividend Harvesting – Definitive Guide

Twice each year, there are several weeks when many companies go ex-dividend and deliver dividends to their investors. Some investors buy and hold stocks primarily to capture the dividend for periodic income over time, while some traders try to harvest the dividends by holding the stock short term around the ex-dividend date.

There are problems with both of these strategies; but exactly what are the problems? What are the pros and cons of holding a stock for the dividend, either short term or long term? Did you know there are serious risks with either approach? Also, do you remember the broadly touted view that a stock’s share price will generally fall by the amount of the dividend? Well, that is absolute rubbish! It’s a complete furphy!!

In this session we will explore these issues, and in particular we will have a close look at how the share price typically performs around the ex-dividend date, and touch on things like:

  • The amount of notice a company gives regarding the upcoming dividend details.
  • How to find past dividend dates and dividend amounts.
  • Some of the publicly published Dividend Yield figures are rather confusing, while some are deceptively wrong!
  • Beware of seemingly large Dividend Yield amounts and special dividends.

Topic: An In-depth Look at Candlestick Patterns

Many of us realise that one candlestick on a share market price chart summarises the price action in one period — a day, or a week, or a month, etc. A single candle can tell a story about the opinions of the real market participants during that period. In addition to this, two or three (or more) consecutive candles can form a specific candle pattern and tell us even more of a story. However, there are lots of candle patterns, and each pattern has its own name. So how can we go about learning and recognising these many patterns? How can we utilise just a small amount of knowledge about candle patterns to analyse many possible patterns on the price chart? In this session Robert will explain a different approach to identifying and interpreting candle patterns.

Topic: Predicting the markets - Profiting from the right side of the charts.

Being a successful trader requires the individual to predict with a high degree of accuracy how a market or stock is likely to unfold on the blank right hand side of their chart. To achieve this, the trader needs to gain a confluence of three areas of analysis - price, pattern and time. In this presentation, Dale and Janine will share a study of the cycles in the All-Ordinaries Index using data going back to 1875. Rebalancing is a term used to describe when stocks are moved from one Index to another such as from the ASX300 to the ASX200, or vice versa as the company grows larger or smaller. As many institutions have rules about which index, they can own stock, is there an opportunity to buy and sell stock to take advantage of this movement between various indices. Topic: Trading System Design: A Practical Guide.

What makes a good trading system? How do we know if one entry or exit is better than another? How do we come up with a trading system that suits our personality and lifestyle, and meets our trading objectives?

In this practical guide to trading system development, Alan will outline the process of investigating, testing and quantifying trading ideas - as well as pointing out some of the pitfalls typically made along the way. He will demonstrate the role skill and luck play in trading, and will show why some entries and exits work better than others.

He'll also discuss why just getting the market direction right is not enough to make consistent gains over the long run.

Speaker: Robert Brain

Topic: Price Action Context – Explanations for unexpected share price movements

You’ve probably seen a lot of odd, or unexpected, share price movements on the price charts and wondered what has caused these moves, and whether it should change your view about fair value or your intended or current position. Mind you, some traders don’t care and simply press on regardless – whether that is the smartest thing to do or not.

There is often a good reason that explains the price moves. When applying technical analysis notions to price charts, it can be very useful to understand why the price has moved unexpectedly, and to consider the "context" within which the price action has occurred. That is, which company announcements or other news items have influenced the price move? In this session Robert will explain the notion of Price Action Context in more detail, and show some examples to explain why this is so useful, and also provide some great tips explaining how to help find out the underlying cause of these price moves.

Speaker: Matthew Jones

Topic: Investment Climate 2023

2022 will go down as the year of the Interest Rate Rise. Both the Australian and US central banks undertook an aggressive policy of raising interest rates, the speed of which has never been seen before. Growth assets got crushed. In fact, nearly all assets fell in 2022. There were very few places to hide. Now that the year is over, what can we expect in 2023? More of the same or will it get worse? Just where should we invest this year? Please join Matthew for his quarterly stock market update where we will answer these questions.
