Mark Bennell – The psychology of high probability trades.

What drives successful breakout trades? Anyone can easily identify price breaking an obvious support or resistance level, but what leads to a failed breakout and more importantly, what underlying factors drive successful breakout trades?

Darryl Guppy – Tweaking the toolbox to improve trade performance.

Failure to recognise when market conditions have changed means traders may deploy the wrong combination of in the task of trading. Their performance suffers unnecessarily because they are using the tools in an inappropriate way. The challenge of improving your trading performance is to know when to use the tools you know best in a more appropriate way given changed market conditions. It may also involve resurrecting some tools discarded previously when markets changed. Daryl Guppy will show you how to improve trade performance in today’s market conditions, so you don’t get mugged in losing trades.

Mandi Pour Rafsenjani – Cognitive models for optimised decision making.
Mandi Pour Rafsenjani – Cognitive models for optimised decision making.

In his famous 1994 speech, Charlie Munger shared his practical approach to making good decisions: “You’ve got to hang experience on a latticework of models in your head.”

Cognitive models are frameworks of thinking through which we process the external world. They shape how and what we think, they help us deal constructively with challenges we encounter and decide which opportunities get lost in our blind spot and which ones we notice. They are useful to simplify the complexity of the trading world.

The quality of our thinking is proportional to the models and frameworks in our mind. The ability to think through models will rapidly improve your decision-making process, especially under pressure. In this session you will learn 5 key cognitive models that will help you to optimise your decision-making process and so improve your performance.

Chris Weston – Volatility – the only true asset class.

Volatility makes markets – it defines your strategy, the instruments you trade, the direction and most importantly the risk you take on and the position size. You may not know it, but it's the most important factor in trading, you just need to measure, harness, and adapt to it.

In this presentation, Chris will demonstrate how we can read volatility and use it to measure market sentiment while offering a more dynamic approach to risk management. Chris will also look at how we can use volatility to trade extreme moves and look at higher probability mean reversion opportunities.

Topic: Using the ATR to refine entry and exit decisions

The use of the Average True Range (ATR) within trading systems is not uncommon particularly in its use for defining initial stop levels as its role as a volatility measure takes into account potential movements in price.

However, its adaptability for both variable pricing and timeframe of trading instruments and strategies but also its potential use in other trading decision making action points is often underplayed.

With reference to market participant price action and order placement, we will explore the potential use of the ATR to:

  • Reduce the incidence of false breakouts
  • Assist in the setting of meaningful profit targets
  • Its use in setting initial stop but also as part of a trail stop system
  • Compensate for limited information during the entry of pending/conditional orders.

The ATR will be explored to provide justification of a position while using LIVE examples during the session.

As developing consistency in trading action so allowing effective measurement of system components and refinement of trading plans is critical for development of individually appropriate trading systems, during the session we will give example statements that could be adapted and integrated within your written trading plan.

Saturday 11 September - Brisbane Chapter Meeting

Speaker: Richard Brennan

Topic: The impact of Noise on Trading Models and a Quantitative Approach to isolate Meaningful Data to give an Edge

A stimulating discussion is proposed whereby we look at concepts of 'noise' and 'signals' in real market data. Having this understanding then allows us to apply a quantitative approach to isolate meaningful data from noisy data to give us an edge in our trading systems.

The presentation steps through important considerations to assist us to perhaps at least consider why it is essential to empirically test our models in a quantitative and systematic way to discover whether or not we can capture causal signals existing in otherwise noisy market data with our systems.

Initially the content to be discussed in this excellent series will form the basis of the introduction to noise and its impact in market data:

Once members have an understanding of these broad concepts, I will the showcase the content in the following 3 videos using a real interactive process:

Part 4: Creating a random market data series and a random market data series with inserted bias . We will also examine a generated random market data series and see how traditional indicators such as MACD, Support and Resistance, RSI and Stochastic indicators which still seem to work when applied to random market data.

Part 5: Assessing how this simulated data performs in tests undertaken with real trend following models.

We will run real simple trend following models on this data to see how we can be lulled into a false sense of an edge even when we use random market data and why a large trade sample size is essential in determining whether or not an edge exists. We will then compare the performance of these models when applied to random market data and real market data to understand there is only a weak edge in real market data but this is all we need to find a profitable system in the long term provided we can strictly manage risk at all times.

Part 6: Reshuffling real market data to observe the effect on our Trend Following Models. This introduces members to the concept of serially correlated data and it's importance for all trading models.

This presentation will conclude with a discuss of the important factors raised in the following excellent episode with Tim Masters. Tim worked very closely with David Aronson ("Evidence Based Technical Analysis").

Speaker: Robert Brain

Topic: How do most of us trade/invest? Why do we pick the stocks that we buy?

What is the best way to choose stocks for purchase? Should we exclusively use either technical analysis, or fundamental analysis? Or a mixture? Or should we focus on a preferred market sector? Or perhaps choose a company that has a “good story” and hope they deliver?

In recent months the BullCharts User Group members have been playing a stock picking game, where each person is invited to nominate just one stock to hold in the game for a few weeks or months. Each member was invited to explain the details behind why they chose their stock. For a group of technical analysts the answers have been very surprising, and might be indicative of why ATAA members invest/trade in the stocks that they do.

In this session Robert will divulge the many reasons for stock selection that are in use among our colleagues and peers – which surprisingly include the use of both technical analysis and fundamental analysis to varying degrees. The information to be presented might give ATAA members some comfort with their own stock selection ideas and methods, so it will be a very useful session to attend.

If time permits, the webinar participants will be invited to contribute to the discussion and share their own observations about successful stock picking.

Saturday 10 July - Newcastle Chapter Meeting
Saturday 10 July - Newcastle Chapter Meeting

Speaker: Sunil Mangwani

Topic: Risk Management the importance of following the correct elements

Ask any professional trader the secret to success and they will most likely mention Risk Management as the key factor. Effective Risk Management is a combination of different elements like Win/Loss Ratio, Correct Position Sizing, Risk-to-Reward Ratio, etc., with each of these varying in degree of importance.

Knowing which are the more important elements is crucial to consistently growing the account. For example, a common misconception is the importance of the Win/Loss Ratio. Most traders tend to give priority to this, rather obviously, as having a larger number of winning trades is beneficial to the account.

The simple fact is that losing trades are dependent on market forces and something that a trader cannot control. Hence concentrating on this would be incorrect.

In this webinar, we will focus on each of these elements and find out the most important one that a trader should concentrate on.

Understanding the proper one ensures account growth and, more importantly, determines what kind of market should be traded and on what time frames to trade.

Saturday 29 May - MetaStock User Group SIG / Interpreting Daryl Guppy's MMA

Speaker: Kevin Nelson

Topic: How to interpret Daryl Guppy's Multiple Moving Average indicator

The Multiple Moving average indicator is included in the MetaStock program but to further assist traders, Kevin Nelson created several items which will help you back test your system and scan for securities that meet the setup requirements.

About Daryl Guppy’s Multiple Moving Average Indicator.

The Guppy Multiple Moving Average (GMMA) is a technical indicator that identifies changing trends, breakouts, and trading opportunities in the price of an asset by combining two groups of moving averages (MA) with different time periods. The GMMA consists of a short-term group of MAs and a long-term group of MAs, both containing six MAs, for a total of 12, and is overlaid on the price chart of an asset. When the short-term group of averages moves above the longer-term group, it indicates a price uptrend in the asset could be emerging.

Daryl Guppy is an Australian trader that has provided trading and investment analysis of financial markets for more than 25 years. He has developed several technical indicators which are included in industry standard software such as DZH International, Metastock and Omnitrader as well as many other charting programs. Globally many traders use the technical indicators developed by Guppy to trade equities and other markets.

There are multiple trading strategies on the Market and many money managers using different ways to approach their trades. The only one thing remains in common among them is ability to combine fundamental analysis, technical analysis and general situation on the Market. That is why if you want to increase your trading returns, you’d better know how to do it.

  • When and why, we use this strategy;
  • Understanding a difference between REAL Value of the business and price of the stock;
  • Value trap and what you need to know to avoid it;
  • Value investing vs Value trading;
  • Why do you get higher profitability when combine value and technical analysis;
  • When do we buy and when do we sell if we use this strategy;

Topic: Measuring Trading Performance

Measuring trading performance is critical not only from a personal behavioral perspective but also to ensure that your system develops to fit you as an individual trader. This session addresses this topic theoretically and practically with the aim of giving you the knowledge, skills and downloadable tools to help you succeed in delivering this ESSENTIAL part of your on-going trading development, and is applicable for all traders, investing in all financial instruments.

Arguably, measuring trading performance is one of the important differentiating factors between trading as a hobby and trading as a business.

In this session we will cover:

  • Why measuring trading is critical to your on-going development and the serious implications of not doing this
  • The key trading business numbers which are your benchmark for measuring success or otherwise
  • How to measure and record effectively your trade system performance so you can determine which parts of that system are working for you (and which are not).
  • How to undertake a formal review of collected information so you can "close the circle" and integrate evidence back into your trading system and behaviors.

This learning is not to be missed.
