Thursday 10th October - Melbourne Chapter Meeting / Robert Brain & Thomas Atkinson

Speaker: Robert Brain

Topic: Should I have bought this stock?

In this session Robert will show a price chart for a security (a stock, or ETF or whatever), with the last four weeks of price data hidden. And he will ask you this question: “Should I have bought this security a month ago?” Robert can add a chart indicator to the chart, and show you the daily, or weekly, or monthly price data. We can view a candle chart, or line chart, or HLC chart, or whatever – that’s your call during the meeting. After some discussion, and some sharing of opinions, Robert will display the stock performance over the last four weeks so as to reveal whether we should have, or should not have, bought this stock. In this session you will have two opportunities: (1) to show us how good your stock-picking is, and (2) the opportunity to pick up some tips from others about stock-picking. To give you a clue, we might use a security from the S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) index to help guarantee liquidity.

Topic: Know Your System! - Turning Data Mining from Bias to Benefit through System Parameter Permutation

Graham will present his investigation of Dave Walton's 2014 Wagner Award Paper winner, "Know Your System! - Turning Data Mining from Bias to Benefit through System Parameter Permutation". In this paper, Dave Walton argues for a change in the way strategy optimization is usually conducted, and presents an alternative way to analyse optimization results to avoid data mining and over-fitting.

The purpose of this meeting is to generate discussion on one of the most serious issues facing strategy developers. Graham will present his take on Dave Walton's approach. Graham's presentation will present the techniques advocated by the author and to demonstrate their application using a model trading system. The paper also attempts to assist the trader in answering two questions:

1) What is a reasonable performance estimate of the long-run edge of the trading system?

2) What worst-case contingencies must be tolerated in short-run performance in order to achieve the long-run expectation?

Monday 22nd July - Melbourne Quant SIG / Adrian Reid
Monday 22nd July - Melbourne Quant SIG / Adrian Reid

Speaker: Adrian Reid

Topic: Beyond the Backtest - Better Optimization and Robustness Testing

In this presentation, Adrian Reid (Founder of Enlightened Stock Trading) delves into the realms of trade optimization and robustness testing, emphasizing the limitations and potential pitfalls of relying solely on backtesting when developing trading systems. The talk is structured to tackle several key points critical for enhancing trading performance and confidence in trading systems.

Introduction

Adrian begins by highlighting the ease of backtesting and the misleading sense of security it can provide. He asserts that backtesting alone often leads to systems that do not perform well in real-time trading. The presentation aims to offer advanced techniques for assessing the robustness and future profitability of trading systems.

Common Problems in Systematic Trading

Adrian addresses common issues including emotional impacts on trading, insufficient data for system optimization, and overfitting systems to past data. These elements often lead to a lack of trust in the system’s generated signals, causing traders to make emotional decisions that can be detrimental.

Harnessing Emotions for Better Trading

Instead of suppressing emotions, traders are advised to harness them. Techniques to convert emotional reactions into actionable rules are shared. Traders are encouraged to consciously evaluate each trade signal, list sources of uncertainty, and generate rules to isolate these uncertainties.

Evaluating System Robustness

A systematic way to evaluate trading systems is proposed. By backtesting with slight variations in parameters (plus/minus 20%), traders can determine the robustness of the system. The results provide insights into whether the chosen parameters are robust or prone to overfitting.

Better Use of Historical Data through Random Miss Technique

For portfolio systems, traditional optimization methods often miss important signals. The speaker introduces a 'random miss' technique, whereby 30% of trades are randomly skipped during optimization. This method helps incorporate more information into the analysis without overfitting, thereby enhancing the reliability of the system.

Compounding vs. All Trades Backtest

The merits and demerits of two backtesting methods—compounding and all trades—are discussed. Whereas compounding tests provide realistic growth and drawdown metrics but miss rejected signals, all trades tests capture all potential signals but lack realistic compounding insights.

Conclusion

By employing these advanced techniques for optimization and robustness testing, systematic traders can avoid the pitfalls of emotional trading and overfitting, ultimately leading to more reliable and profitable trading systems. The presentation wraps up with an offer for free resources aimed at further assisting traders in enhancing their systems.

Topic: The Crucial Factors of Money Management.

Continuing from the previous webinar of the importance of 3M’s – Money, Mind & Method, we will delve deeper into the crucial 'M' factor – Money Management. Ask any professional trader the secret to success & they would most likely mention Risk Management, as this is one of the most important factors responsible for success or failure.

But there are various facets, even within the parameters of Risk Management, which are crucial to the proper implementation. Did you know that choosing the markets you trade & the time frames you trade on, should ideally be decided by factors of Money Management? Secondly, most traders tend to give priority to the Win/Loss ratio. While having a larger number of winning trades is beneficial to the account, there is another factor which is more important.

Understanding these crucial points of Money Management will put you on the path to successful trading.

Topic: “All about ETFs in Australia today"

At the time of writing there are more than 370 ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) available for you to buy/sell on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) share market, offered by a number of ETF providers. However, when you study some of these ETFs you will find that many are not very liquid. This might not be an issue for some investors, but it is an issue for many investors and traders.

So, how do we find out which ones are tradeable / investable? Which ones are safe to play with? What sort of thematic do they follow? Who are the major ETF providers in Australia? Where can we go for more information?

In this session, Robert sets out to answer all of these questions about ETFs, and more.

Topic: Analysing Fractals and Elliott Waves in The Financial World (Part 1)

This presentation is based on the book by Matías Menéndez Larre, where we will explore the fundamental concepts that reveal the hidden structure of market movements. We will begin our tour with the term that has recently resonated in financial circles: "fractals".

Fractals - Roots and Connections: We will address the evolution of the concept of fractals from Mandelbrot's pioneering research to their intrinsic connection with Elliott Waves, proposed by Ralph Nelson Elliott in the 1930s. We will examine how these two pillars intertwine to form the basis of our conceptual model.

The Principle of Elliott Waves: Although the principle of Elliott Waves has endured over time, its complexity has given rise to various interpretations. We will explore how the foundations of this principle can be connected to Mandelbrot's research, providing a comprehensive and solid perspective to understand and predict the behavior of financial instruments.

Building a Solid Conceptual Model: In this first part, our focus will be on exploring the connections between fractals and Elliott Waves. We will work together to build a solid conceptual model that lays the foundation for understanding market dynamics and establishing a firm ground for future exploration in part 2.

Topic: Understanding the Big Picture of Artificial Intelligence through Machine Learning applied to the Technical Analysis Field

My aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of Machine Learning (that is, a general view) but using examples from TA, so attendees can see how machine learning is revolutionizing technical analysis, making it more accessible and powerful than ever.

In the presentation, I’d cover the most fundamental concepts of machine learning, ensuring it is understandable for everyone, regardless of their prior knowledge on the subject. I will explain why machine learning is such a powerful tool for technical analysts, differentiating between supervised and unsupervised learning, classical and deep algorithms, and how these approaches are applied in technical analysis to uncover patterns and trends in market data. On the positive side, it enables everyone, regardless of their prior knowledge of Machine Learning, to gain a foothold in this field. On the downside, for those already familiar with machine learning, it might feel like a review of known subjects, albeit applied to Technical Analysis, leaving them wanting more. Nonetheless, this approach is preferable, and should there be interest, we can discuss a later practical talk using Python.

Furthermore, we will discuss the various types of technical analyses that can be conducted using machine learning and the basis of deep learning and its applications. To conclude, I will offer guidance on the first steps for those interested in exploring this field.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Automated Trading – What is it?
  • Automated Trading – What is it not?

  •  Setting it up.

In order to spend more time mentoring Colin started exploring trading automation in 2016 and today has three user friendly, profitable systems for his clients to choose from. The strength of the systems is the inbuilt risk management. Colin likes to think of his systems as “simple systems that have been well automated”. Throughout Colin’s trading journey and in his private mentoring work he has always been keen on simplicity. “You don’t need complexity in trading. You need robust, simple software coupled with disciplined risk management and a good trading mindset”.

Topic: Trading effectively by using the 3M’s – Money, Mind & Method.

Most traders believe that having an effective trading technique will give them the ‘Holy Grail’ of trading.

But successful trading is a process consisting of different factors, which I call the 3M’s – Money, Mind & Method.

In this, the ‘Method’ (technical analysis) is the least important part of the trading process & unless the trader incorporates the concepts of ‘Money Management’ & the ‘Mind’ factor, the probability of success is slim.

In this webinar we will break down each “M” component with precise rules.

* Money – Understand the “2 Golden Rules” of Risk Management, without which a trader cannot grow the account.

* Mind – Understand the components of ‘Discipline & Patience’ which is essential for a trader to succeed.

* Method – Understand the ‘Trap Moves’ created by professional traders……to take money from the inexperienced retail traders, by effectively using tools like Fibonacci ratios

Speaker: Robert Brain

Topic: “4 Windows” – One way to analyse stocks and the market

Is now the right time to buy into the market? Are any stocks worth buying right now? Should we use a “market Go/No-Go filter” to minimise risk? What is the best way to periodically review stocks and the market?

There are literally thousands of different ways to answer these questions, and all of them can be right. In this session Robert will describe what he calls his “4-Windows” method of analysis, including: (a) studying plain price, (b) looking at the “big picture”, (c) using key chart indicators, and (d) considering volume. And he will apply this analysis to the current market and share his market analysis. This session will be full of useful tips and hints, and will provoke a lot of discussion.

Topic: Lessons for Traders from Nobel-Prize winner Daniel Kahneman’s bestselling book “Thinking, Fast and Slow”

Daniel Kahneman is one of the world’s most pre-eminent psychologists, receiving the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002. Much of his work involved trying to understand how people’s automatic responses to circumstances affect the rational choices they should be making. Our hard-wired responses often have a greater effect on our choices than we realise, even though we consider ourselves to be rational beings. In his bestselling book “Thinking, Fast and Slow”, Daniel details the ways in which we are often influenced by factors outside of our rational selves.

These factors include Cognitive Biases, Anchoring, Overconfidence, the Availability Heuristic and the Planning Fallacy. Of particular interest to Traders is Loss Aversion, related to Prospect Theory, in which we place different weights on Gains and Losses, and end up selling the wrong stocks. Hindsight Bias afflicts many traders developing trading strategies. We always tend to look for causes for the trading results we get, when many can often be simply explained by Regression to the Mean, which can also be used by traders in developing successful strategies. How good is a discretionary trader’s intuition, versus using a set formula for making trading decisions?

Jim is not a psychologist, but his background in science led him to try and understand some of the psychological factors involved in decision-making, so he can improve his own trading performance.
